Free and Open-source Software Pics
Google Chrome http://www.google.com/chrome best web browser
Chrome Extensions: Chrome Radio Player Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer (by Google) IE Tab (if you really need an IE window) Sexy Undo Close Tab (allows you to re-open a recently closed tab)
G-mail drive http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm (gmailfs116.zip)
Allows you to mount a drive in Explorer so you can drag&drop. It basically stores the file as an e-mail attachment within G-mail. (Since I have Gmail setup as a POP3 download, this also means it shows up in my Thunderbird e-mail program - which is a disadvantage.)
Irfan View http://www.irfanview.com/ (iview427_setup.exe)
Nice picture management software. I like the ability to use Function keys to move pictures to another directory. I can scan through my new pics, and using keystrokes select the pictures I want to upload to Costco to print.
KarenWare http://www.karenware.com/
Replicator http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp (ptreplicator-setup.exe) Full-featured file/folder back-up program; automatic scheduling
Directory Printer http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptdirprn.asp (ptdirprn-setup.exe) Print or 'save as text' the contents of a directory(ies)
LastPass http://lastpass.com/ LastPass - Version: 1.70.11 Password management software; browser extension
Launchy http://www.launchy.net/ (LaunchySetup103.exe) I'm running an old version
Used to launch applications without a mouse. Hit <Alt-Space> and a command box comes up. Start typing the application you want. As you type, a list will generate. Keep typing or cursor down and hit enter.
Open Office Suite http://www.openoffice.org/ (OOo_3.2.1_Win_x86_install-wJRE_en-US.exe)
Open-source Office Suite based on Sun's StarOffice. (Sun got tired of paying Microsoft licensing fees for Office, so they bought and revamped StarOffice.)
Google Docs Extension (gdocs_2.2.0.oxt) http://code.google.com/p/ooo2gd/downloads/detail?name=gdocs_2.2.0.oxt
Add-on for Open Office that allows me to save my local OpenOffice Doc to my on-line Google Docs storage cloud (do not have to do a seperate file upload within Google Docs; file can be accessed from anywhere)
Paint.NET http://www.getpaint.net/ (Paint.NET.3.5.5.Install.zip)
Open source full-featured photo editing software
PDF Applications (I do not have any Adobe PDF products installed. 35 MB for Adobe Reader 9)
PDF Writer:
PD Fill: http://www.pdfill.com (PDFill_Free_Writer.exe) (9.1 MB)
PDF Readers:
PDF XChange Viewer http://www.tracker-software.com/ (PDFXVwer.zip) (12.9 MB)
Also worth mentioning... Foxit: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/ (FoxitReader42_enu_Setup.exe) (7.5 MB) I used this one for years. It is much smaller and faster than Adobe Reader. Recently ran into a problem where it wouldn't open a PDF file that was generated from an on-line magazine to automatically print upon opening. PDF XChange Viewer is the replacement.PureText http://www.stevemiller.net/puretext/ (PureText.exe)
Using keyboard commands, it will paste plain-text instead of rich text. Strips out unwanted graphics, HTML, formatting, etc.
The same as pasting into Notepad and then re-copying and pasting.
Notepad replacements:
Edit Pad Lite http://www.editpadlite.com/ (SetupEditPadLite.exe) Much better than Notepad, with tabbed windows, etc. This has a feature to insert a file within an existing file which I need.
Also worth mentioning: NotePad Plus Plus http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ (npp.5.8.3.Installer.exe) This is the most highly rated Notepad replacement, but it doesn't have the insert file function that I need.Img Burn http://www.imgburn.com/ (SetupImgBurn_2.5.2.0.exe) Good CD/DVD burning software; low frills, but very powerful.
Image Resizer http://imageresizer.codeplex.com/ (ImageResizer-2.1.1_x64.msi) Based on Microsoft's PowerToy Image Resizer (right-click to resize)
Thunderbird http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/ (Thunderbird Setup 2.0.0.24.exe) Open source e-mail program (instead of Outlook or Outlook Express). I'm running an older version because of a calendar add-on I like.
True Crypt http://www.truecrypt.org/ (TrueCrypt Setup 7.0a.exe) File encryption program
USB Disk Ejector http://quick.mixnmojo.com/usb-disk-ejector (USBDiskEjector1.1.2.zip) A program that allows you to quickly remove USB devices in Windows.
Wavosaur http://www.wavosaur.com/ (Wavosaur.1.0.5.0.exe) A full-featured sound editing program. At only 556 KB, you'll be amazed at what this program can do. http://www.wavosaur.com/features.php
Commercial products:
Skype http://www.skype.com (SkypeSetup.exe) (free)
iTunes: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ (iTunes64Setup.exe) (free)
64 is for 64-bit, not version 6.4 I'm running iTunes 10.0.1.22
Network Magic http://www.purenetworks.com/ (nmsetup.exe)
It seems Windows 7 may have better networking features than XP, but since I have a license, I still use this on our laptops.
Need to evaluate
File Shredder http://www.fileshredder.org/ (file_shredder_setup.exe)
I read about Eraser http://eraser.heidi.ie/, and did some research to find File Shredder
My Lock Box http://www.fspro.net/my-lockbox/ (mylockbox_setup.exe) Allows you to password protect a folder. Could use as an alternative to TrueCrypt, but haven't tried it.
